Services for Self-Represented Litigants
Consultation and Strategic Advice
This is the single most important service we offer. A consultation allows us to review your case objectively, assess its strengths and weaknesses, and provide strategic guidance on how to proceed. We help you identify the appropriate causes of action, the types of damages to claim, and the steps most likely to advance your position.
Based on years of litigation experience, we aim to evaluate your matter through the same lens a court would apply. This helps you make informed and practical decisions about how to move forward with your case. Consultation and strategic advice can be obtained at any stage of the litigation process, but ideally before drafting a demand letter or commencing a court action, to ensure your strategy is sound from the outset.
Document Preparation
We can assist you by preparing your legal documents or reviewing drafts you have prepared yourself. These may include demand letters, Statements of Claim or Defence, motion materials, affidavits, questions for examinations for discovery, trial preparation materials, and other key court documents.
Each document is drafted while keeping in mind that it will ultimately be reviewed by a judge, opposing counsel, or other decision-makers. Our goal is to ensure that your materials are clear, persuasive, and strategically aligned with your overall case. Effective legal drafting is both a skill and an art, which is developed through years of litigation experience, and we apply that experience to help you present your case in the strongest possible way.
Coaching
Litigation rarely follows a straight path. Even with a solid strategy in place, new issues and unexpected developments often arise along the way. Our coaching service provides focused, issue-specific guidance to help you manage these situations as they come up.
You may need to know how to bring a motion for refusals or undertakings, respond to new evidence, or address a procedural question. We can walk you through each step, explaining what needs to be done, why it matters, and how to approach it effectively.
Coaching is most effective when we understand the broader context of your case, allowing us to tailor our advice to your overall objectives. It’s designed to help you stay on course and make sound decisions as your matter progresses, recognizing that litigation is a constantly moving process.
Limited Scope Court Representation
Even while you are representing yourself, you may wish to have a lawyer assist you with a specific step in your case. We can appear on your behalf for particular steps such as a motion, trial, or examination for discovery, without becoming your lawyer of record.
This limited-scope representation allows you to benefit from professional advocacy when it matters most. A lawyer can anticipate legal objections, procedural issues, and evidentiary challenges that may arise in court and respond effectively on your behalf.
You can retain us to both prepare and argue your motion, or if you have already prepared your materials, we can handle the oral advocacy portion for you. This flexible approach ensures that you receive targeted legal assistance where it will have the greatest impact while maintaining control of your overall case.
